How to Pick a Good Wedding Photographer

Here are some things to keep in mind when selecting a photographer:

1. Chemistry: Choose a Photographer that works well with you and your fiancĂ©. Having chemistry with your significant other is one thing but you’re going to want to have chemistry with your photographer, too. Most photographer’s include an engagement session as part of their wedding package. Use the engagement session as an opportunity to see how you two mesh with the photographer. Make sure you get along and have a respectful, working relationship.

2. Flexibility: Make sure your photographer is flexible and open to communicating a few times before the wedding day. Don’t assume they’ll know all the important moments you want them to capture. It’s the photographer’s job to get as much of everything featured as possible, but they should still be given a roadmap.

3. Share, share, share: Be specific and vocal. Your photographer should know the details of your venue, the ballroom and stage decor, and what is most significant to you. Give him/her a schedule if you have one. This will better prepare the photographer. They won’t miss a key shot, but they may have limitations to how long they stay in the cocktail hour space while the event is going on.

4. Experience: Select an experienced photographer who has shot your type of wedding before. Ideally, they should have shot an Indian, Pakistani, mixed, etc wedding before. They don’t have to be South Asian, but do need to have an understanding of the rituals, ceremonies and customs that take place. Make sure to explain the religious and cultural ceremonies. Ask to look at photos they’ve done for other weddings.

5. SPEND: Don’t cheap out on your photographer. It’s the one area that you shouldn’t skimp on. You can’t go back in time and reshoot your wedding day. A good photographer will give you nice pictures, but a great photographer will make them magical.
